Weekend Planner: Music
The Christmas liturgical text “O magnum mysterium” describing the birth of Jesus has been set to music by dozens of composers since the Renaissance. “Great Mysteries,” the winter concert of Pioneer Valley Cappella will feature six of them, including settings by Tomas Luis de Victoria, Giovanni Gabrieli, Cristobal de Morales, Jacob Handl, Ned Rorem and John Harbison. “Each composer responds to the mystery with an intensely personal voice, balancing wonder and joy [in] music of extraordinary beauty and radiance,” says PVC’s Christine Overstreet.
The program will also feature “Ave Maria” by Josquin Des Prez, Marienlieder by Brahms and other works celebrating Mary.
Performances are Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 98 North Maple St. in Hadley, and Sunday at 3 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 48 Elm St., Northampton. A freewill donation is requested.
