Week 3 High School Football Capsules

Smith Vocational at Pathfinder

Friday, 7

Records: Vikings (0-2, 0-2 Tri-County); Pioneers (0-2, 0-2)

Last week: Smith Voke lost to Dean Tech 24-6; Pathfinder lost to Pioneer 36-24

Vikings Pioneers

Offense 10.0 Offense 12.0

Defense 39.0 Defense 33.0

Comments: The new varsity team and the longtime contender are the lone 0-2 teams in the league heading into the contest. Smith Vocational made huge strides from Game 1 to Game 2 and hope to continue that level of improvement in the program’s third game. Each team will rely on its quarterback to move the ball on the ground.

Easthampton at Mahar

Friday, 7

Records: Eagles (1-0, 0-0 Intercounty); Senators (0-1, 0-0)

Last week: Easthampton beat St. Joseph’s 53-6; Mahar lost to Hoosac Valley 54-6

Eagles Senators

Offense 53.0 Offense 6.0

Defense 6.0 Defense 54.0

Comments: The Eagles make their league debut after moving up from the Tri-County this season. Both teams played Berkshire County squads last week, but to much different results. Easthampton showed off its depth with a dominating ground performance despite missing leading returning rusher Lou Burrell.

Greenfield at Belchertown

Saturday, 11 a.m.

Records: Green Wave (1-1, 0-0 Intercounty); Orioles (0-1, 0-1)

Last week: Greenfield lost to Lee 26-12; Belchertown lost to Turners Falls 43-13

Green Wave Orioles

Offense 24.0 Offense 13.0

Defense 16.0 Defense 43.0

Comments: Both teams are looking to bounce back from disappointing performances last week. Belchertown’s defense must have better success slowing down the Green Wave this week if it is to get to .500. Greenfield beat Drury in its opener.

Frontier Regional at Cathedral

Saturday at Springfield Central, 1

Records: Red Hawks (1-0, 1-0 Intercounty); Panthers (0-1, 0-1)

Last week: Frontier defeated Ludlow 12-6; Cathedral was off after losing to Ludlow 8-6 on Sept. 6

Red Hawks Panthers

Offense 12.0 Offense 6.0

Defense 6.0 Defense 8.0

Comments: Frontier gave new coach Don Gordon a win in his debut last week and looks to improve to 2-0 against a Cathedral squad coming off a bye week. The Red Hawks were focused on re-establishing their defense and last week’s victory was certainly a step in the right direction as the lone Ludlow score came on a fumble recovery in the end zone.

Amherst at St. Mary’s-Lynn

Saturday, 6:30

Records: Hurricanes (0-2); Spartans (1-0)

Last week: Amherst lost to East Longmeadow 28-14; St. Mary’s-Lynn defeated Swampscott 64-39

Hurricanes Spartans

Offense 14.0 Offense 64.0

Defense 44.0 Defense 39.0

Comments: The Hurricanes will take the trip east looking to build on a strong second half against East Longmeadow. Taj-Amir Torres’ two receiving touchdowns were certainly a highlight, but Amherst will have some serious digging to do if it falls into an 0-3 hole to start the season.
