Thursday’s high schools: Gateway boys basketball earns first win

Calvin Dowers and Ryan Fisk hit the 20-point mark to lead the Gateway Regional boys basketball team to its first victory of the season, 66-59 at Holyoke Catholic Thursday night.

Calvin Dowers scored a game-high 21 points, while Fisk had 20 and eight rebounds for the Gators (1-7, 1-1 Bi-County South). Curtis Dowers added 16 points to the winning effort, and Justin Edinger pulled down eight rebounds and played a solid defensive game.

Jeff Laprade scored 18 points for the Gaels (0-7, 0-2), with Nathan Golob adding 14.

Smith Academy 97, Athol 35 — Mat Sulda scored 29 points, 24 in the first half, as the Falcons (6-1, 5-1 Hampshire West) nearly hit the century mark in the home win.

Sulda also had five assists, five rebounds and four assists. Derek McMahon (14 points, six assists, three steals), David Longstreeth (13 points), Keith Natale (12) and Seaver Rickert (11) all finished in double figures.

Will Halloran added six points, seven rebounds and four assists for Smith.

Smith Vocational 49, McCann Tech 44 — Sam Sharpe scored a game-high 21 points to help the Vikings (1-4, 1-0 Tri-County) kick off league play with their first victory of the season.

Dan McCarthy added 14 points in the win.

Greenfield 53, Hopkins Academy 36 — Brett Morrison put in a team-high 10 points in the home loss for the Golden Hawks (1-6, 0-6 Hampshire West).

Greg Pipczynski and Spencer Butterfield each added nine points for Hopkins.

Frontier Regional 64, Mohawk 36 — Paul Decker scored 20 points behind four 3-pointers to lead the Red Hawks (4-3, 4-2 Hampshire West) to the road victory.

Peter Watroba scored 13 points and Ryan Hoar scored six points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the win for Frontier.

Central 54, Northampton 49 — Jake Ross scored a game-high 19 points in the home loss for the Blue Devils (4-2).

Justin Burgos also reached double digits with 11 points.

Minnechaug 62, South Hadley 53 — Evan Marcus led all scorers with 22 points, but the Tigers (3-2) allowed a 15-point halftime lead slip away in the road loss.

Pioneer Regional 52, Easthampton 50 — Chris Starcun was 10 for 11 from the free-throw line and scored a team-high 18 points in the Eagles’ road loss.

Tom Palaschek added 17 points and Shaheim Torres nine for Easthampton (4-4, 2-4 Hampshire East).

Cathedral 8, Longmeadow 1 — John Leonard of Amherst scored a goal as the Panthers (6-1) won easily in a battle of western Mass. powers at the Olympia.
