A pair of defending sectional champions opened their seasons with shutout wins on Tuesday afternoon.

The Belchertown boys soccer team defeated Cathedral 6-0, while the Frontier Regional field hockey team blanked Greenfield 3-0.

Boys soccer

Belchertown 6, Cathedral 0 — William Aldrich scored twice with an assist as the Orioles (1-0, 1-0 Churchill) cruised in Springfield.

Alex DeSantis (assist), Chris Noga (assist), Ryan Kearney (assist) and Noah Lussier added a tally apiece, while Mark Chmura had an assist.

Lewis Berger made one save in goal for Belchertown, which began play in a new league and Division 3.

Field hockey

Frontier 3, Greenfield 0 — Taryn Marquis scored two goals and Jordyn Roberts added one as the Red Hawks (1-0, 1-0 North) were victorious at home.

Brenna Sicard and McKayla Poissant each had one assist.

Gwen Thayer blanked Greenfield with two saves.

Smith Academy 3, Mohawk 1 — Lauren Grondin scored twice off corner plays as the Falcons (1-0, 1-0 North) won their opener in Hatfield.

Danielle Duseau had a goal and an assist, while Ashley Higgins also had an assist.

Lauren Bradford made six saves in the win.

Smith led 2-0 at halftime. Mohawk cut the deficit to 2-1 but couldn’t get the equalizer.

Girls soccer

Smith Academy 8, Turners Falls 0 — Cassidy Snyder had four goals and two assists as the Falcons (1-0) enjoyed an easy home win to start their season.

Snyder is now eight goals away from 100 for her career.

Carrie Ellis (assist) scored twice for Smith, while McKenzie Wilson and Sarah Pawloski had one apiece. Mia Ellis assisted twice and Hannah Rickert once.

Falcons goalie Brooke Pashek completed the shutout with four saves.

Easthampton 0, Hampshire Regional 0 — The rivals battled to a scoreless draw in the season opener in Westhampton.

Eagles (0-0-1) goalie Alyssa Fugiel made 21 saves.

Madison Boucher played the first half and had one save for the Raiders (0-0-1). Kayla Labrecque came on in the second half and didn’t face a shot.

Girls volleyball

Mahar 3, Easthampton 1 — The Eagles (0-1) dropped their season opener at home, 25-20, 25-13, 25-27, 25-18.

Easthampton’s Caelin Mottor enjoyed a solid all-around match with six digs, four aces, three kills and two blocks. Ruthenee Nhem had six assists and a pair of aces, while Amanda Lambert added six digs and two kills.

Athol 3, Belchertown 0 — The Orioles (0-1) were swept in their season and home opener, 25-17, 25-19, 25-17.

Erin Reed-Coates had five kills for Belchertown, Alexis Ryan added four and Emily Woodford (ace) three.
