Driver suffers minor injuries when car crashes into home on West Street in Granby

Police said Ellis Webber, 23, lost control of his station wagon at around 11:30 p.m., veered off the road into a utility pole and then struck the house, owned by Sean Knightly.

Knightly, who was jolted awake by the collision, called it a “frightening experience.”

“I was half asleep on the couch,” Knightly said. “It sounded like a large explosion and the power went out.”

Granby Police Chief Alan Wishart said Webber was taken by ambulance to Holyoke Medical Center. A spokesman there said Webber was treated and released early Wednesday morning.

“For this type of accident, the driver’s injuries were not as bad as they could have been,” Wishart said, adding that the front end of the car was heavily damaged.

Knightly, who lives in the house with his wife, Cynthia, and their grandson, said that the car took out a cherry tree, ripped up his lawn, hit his truck, which was parked in front of the house, and damaged the front cement steps and railing as well as some of the home’s siding.

Right after the crash, Knightly said, he saw smoke coming from the front of the house and immediately called the fire department.

“When I went outside I saw the car was smoking and there was a person sitting inside. I told him to get out of the car because I thought it might explode,” he said. “I could see that he had a nasty gash on the back of his head.”

Knightly said that the car struck his house near his 10-year-old grandson’s bedroom.

“It was the steps that stopped the car. If it had been just six feet over, he would have gone right through my grandson’s bedroom,” Knightly said.

Power to the home was restored around 4 a.m. Wednesday, he said.

“I have to say that the police and fire departments did an excellent job when they got here. They were very professional,” Knightly said.

Wishart said the cause of the accident is under investigation.
