Thursday’s high schools: Amherst boys soccer beats Westfield for fourth straight win

The Amherst Regional boys soccer team has bounced back nicely since a season-opening loss to Belchertown on Sept. 6.

Since then, the Hurricanes have won four in a row, including Thursday’s 6-2 victory over Westfield at home, and outscored their opponents 18-5.

Against the Bombers, Alex LaRaja (assist) and Eric Gooden each scored twice for Amherst, while Gabe Fontes and Wilson Fidalgo added one goal each.

Jesse Welborn and Adam Rice each dished out a pair of assists, while Hadrian Rodriguez was also credited with an assist.

Mike Rock made two saves in net for Amherst.

Boys soccer

Ludlow 2, Northampton 0 — John Brodeur made 12 saves but the Blue Devils (1-3, 1-1 Moriarty) fell to the Lions.

Field hockey

Longmeadow 5, Smith Academy 1 — Isabelle Duseau scored on an assist from Olivia Cavanaugh for the Falcons (4-2) in the loss at home.

Lauren Bradford made 26 saves for Smith Academy.

Minnechaug 1, South Hadley 0 — Tigers goaltender Sam Brault was outstanding with 16 saves, but the Falcons finally broke through for the game winner with three minutes left in the game.

South Hadley fell to 3-4 with the loss in Wilbraham.

Mahar 2, Amherst 1 — Ali McIntire scored and Jules Brissette had the assist but the Hurricanes (2-6) fell at home.

Girls volleyball

Pioneer Valley Christian 3, Smith Vocational 1 — The Vikings (0-4) fell 23-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-10, but won their first set in program history.

Ali Lewis had three kills and four assists, while Deyaneira Padilla added six kills, six assists and two aces for Smith.

South Hadley 3, Pioneer Regional 1 — The Tigers (4-3) earned the independent victory in Northfield, 25-16, 25-16, 21-25, 25-23.

Maddi Kelleher had seven assists and six kills for South Hadley. Meghan Parenteau had six kills and four digs, while Rachel Dizek added nine assists.
