Monday’s high school recaps: South Hadley earns walk-off softball win over Northampton

The South Hadley softball team opened its season in dramatic fashion, taking a 6-5 win over Northampton in eight innings at home Monday.

Maddi Kelleher held the Blue Devils (0-2) scoreless to open extra innings.

She and Merry Kocot walked, and Abby Lukasik singled to load the bases. Delaney Duprat followed with a line drive to knock Kelleher in for the winning win for the Tigers (1-0).

Kelleher finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored and one RBI. She also struck out two and allowed three earned runs on 10 hits and two walk to earned the complete-game win. Kocot finished 2 for 4 in the win.

Rachel Sheehan went 2 for 3 with three runs scored for the Blue Devils. Haley Dumas finished 2 for 4 with a run scored and one RBI in the loss.

Amber Montgomery took the loss, but struck out seven for Northampton.

Hampshire Regional 10, East Longmeadow 0 — The Raiders (1-0) began their season with a shutout road win and a couple of milestones.

Savannah Waters went 2 for 3 to reach 100 hits for her career. She also knocked in a pair of runs.

Pitcher Alexis Ferris threw a complete-game 5-hitter with 11 strikeouts to notch her first varsity victory.

Anna Dziok hit a three-run home run in the win, while Chelsea Moussette added two hits and two RBIs.

Belchertown 17, Ludlow 2 — Erinne Dull led Belchertown with four hits, three runs scored and four RBIs in the blowout road victory.

Mackenzie Yelle had three hits and six RBIs in the win.

McCann 16, Smith Academy 10 — Moria Pitrat led the Falcons (1-1, 1-1 Bi-County) with two hits and two RBIs in the loss at home.

Senior Lauren Grondin struck out four and allowed no walks in the defeat.

Monson 12, Granby 1 — Kate Sullivan doubled and scored the lone run for the Rams (0-1) in the season-opening home loss.

Mallory Beauregard and Brianna Heath had a hit apiece for Granby.

Central 19, Holyoke Catholic 3 (5) — Maggie Sutton (double) scored two runs and Lindsey Robins drove in a pair, but the Gaels (0-2, 0-2) lost on the road.

Anna Craig and Jordon Mercier each added a hit for Catholic.

Southwick 10, Easthampton 5 — Caelin Mottor had nine strikeouts while being handed the loss for Easthampton.

Sydney Flattery (two runs, two RBIs) went 2 for 3 with a home run in the defeat. Gabby Downer scored two runs.

Westfield 8, Amherst Regional 5 — Jazzy Moonstone went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs for the Hurricanes (0-1) in a season-opening road loss.

Becca Carkhuff also had three hits with a run scored and one RBI for Amherst. Nadia Squitiero (run) and Mikah McNamara each added a pair of hits.

Baseball

Gateway Regional 10, Granby 2 — The Gators (1-0, 1-0 Bi-County North) had 14 hits in their season opener in support of winning pitcher Curtis Dowers, who allowed two unearned runs.

Johnny Haskell led Gateway with three hits. He stole three bases, scored twice and drove in a run.

Justin Edinger (two runs, two stolen bases, RBI), Geoff Sobotka (three RBI), Curtis Dowers (two steals, two runs) and Calvin Dowers (two runs, RBI) each had a pair of hits in the win.

Everett Warner picked up his first career hit that drove in two.

Zach Funk had two hits for the Rams (1-1, 0-1).

Monson 15, Hampshire Regional 8 — The Raiders (0-1) scored seven times in the first inning, but couldn’t hang on to the lead in the road loss.

Matt York went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Hampshire. Jake Weir (two RBIs) and Max Weir (RBI) both had two hits.

Boys Volleyball

Agawam 3, Belchertown 0 — Skyelar Whitehead led Belchertown with five kills and three blocks in the lost.

Brandon Ryan had six digs in the defeat on the road.
