New MIAA rule threatens middle school participation in high school sports

A week before a five-year softball starter at Hampshire Regional hit a career milestone, the MIAA approved a rule that would have prevented the feat from happening. On May 14, changes to the MIAA Handbook for 2015-2017 included a rewrite of Rule 53, which regards middle school students on high school athletic teams. The new rule reads: “A Middle School student is eligible to represent a senior high school on its athletic teams only if the school receives a waiver from the MIAA District Committee. High School interscholastics is for Grade 9 thru 12 students only.” The current rule allows middle school students to play …
