Unattended backpack prompts emergency response in Leeds — and other area police news

Authorities respond to backpack left in Leeds

Police Sgt. Robert Powers said officers were called to the scene about noon after the suspicious backpack was found attached to a “lost and found” billboard at a neighboring building.

Powers said police and fire personnel determined the backpack posed no danger to the public.

Amherst

■Araceli Roman, 42, of 30 Gatehouse Road, Apt. 105, was arrested at 8:52 p.m. Monday at an Amherst home on charges of domestic assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

■Joshua David Joray, 29, of Ware, was arrested at 6:45 p.m. Monday in Springfield on a charge of domestic assault and battery related to an incident that occurred earlier in the afternoon at an Amherst home.

■ John T. Cullen, 19, of North Andover, was arrested at 1:16 a.m. Sunday on North Pleasant Street on charges of being a minor in possession of alcohol and receiving stolen property under $250 after he was found walking with a town street sign.

■ Jonathan A. Szwajkowski, 20, of 269 Florence Road, Florence, was arrested at 1:26 a.m. Saturday on Northampton Road on a warrant.

■Ronald Wallace Kimball, 62, of Port Orchard, Wash., was cited for a traffic violation after the vehicle he was driving on Northampton Road at 5 p.m. Friday rear-ended a vehicle driven by Kristina Gunnarsdottir, 23, of New York City, which in turn was pushed into a vehicle driven by Francis P. Buckley, 84, of Springfield, police said.

Bonnie Kimball, 66, a passenger in Ronald Kimball’s vehicle, complained of neck pain and was taken by the Amherst Fire Department to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton for treatment, police said.

All three vehicles were driven from the scene, according to police.

Belchertown

■ Warren Payne, 23, of 121 North Main St., Apt. M5, was arrested at 1:59 a.m. Friday at his home in the Lord Jeffery Apartments on a warrant.

Easthampton

■ Jeffrey R. Spiller Jr., 26, who was listed as homeless, was arrested at 2:57 p.m. Sunday at 118 Northampton St. on three warrants.

■ Jennifer N. Voorhees, 23, of 75 Barrett St., Northampton, was arrested on Pomeroy Street at 10:22 p.m. Friday on a warrant.

■ Police received a report at 4:41 p.m. Friday that a bicycle was stolen from a garage at 131 Ferry St.

■ Police received a report at 1:12 p.m. Friday that an unlocked vehicle parked at 8 Water St. had been broken into and a wallet was missing.

■ Trevor Dyson, 24, of 391 Main St., was arrested at 3:48 a.m. Wednesday on a charge of domestic assault and battery after he allegedly put his hands around his girlfriend’s neck during an argument.

Northampton

■John Lee Kydd, 44, whose address is listed as the streets of Northampton, was arrested at 4:44 p.m. Monday on Pleasant Street on two warrants. According to police, the first warrant was a default issued by Eastern Hampshire District Court on a charge of assault and battery, the second was issued by Holyoke District Court for failure to appear on charges of trespassing and possessing a Class B drug.

■ Lisa M. McCray, 45, of 51 Moser St., Apt. G, was arrested at 4:18 p.m. Sunday on a charge of domestic assault and battery after allegedly pushing another woman against a door and holding her by the neck during an argument.
