Tuesday’s colleges: Mount Holyoke field hockey holds off Smith College

In a battle of one-loss field hockey teams, Mount Holyoke held off a Smith College rally to win 3-2 in Northampton Tuesday.

The Lyons (10-1, 2-1 NEWMAC) led 2-0 on goals by Diana Bannman and Charlotte Wagner, but Alexa DeJesus scored from Allie Stein to pull the Pioneers (8-2, 2-2) within 2-1 with 20 minutes left.

Julia Ball scored from Kirsten Kilburn to give Mount Holyoke a 3-1 lead with 10 minutes left.

Marissa Vara scored from Emma Camilleri with five minutes left to make it interesting for Smith College.

Liz DiCesare made six saves for the Lyons.

Maddi Wyda stopped four for the Pioneers.

Elms 4, Becker 1 — Kayla Narey (South Hadley) scored and Meghan Goodrow (Frontier) had two assists as the Blazers (3-10, 2-0 NECC) won at home.

Women’s soccer

Amherst 4, Eastern Connecticut 1 — Megan Kim scored two goals, while Sarah Duffy and Hannah Cooper each had one as the Lord Jeffs (6-1-2) won at home.

Springfield 5, Smith College 0 — Alanna Lynch made 16 saves but the Pioneers (4-6-1, 2-2 NEWMAC) fell at home.

Clark 2, Mount Holyoke 1 — Ann Shaffrey scored but the Lyons (5-7, 0-4 NEWMAC) fell on the road.

Women’s volleyball

Coast Guard 3, Mount Holyoke 0 — Emma Sweeting had nine kills and seven digs, while Kaleen Iwema added 14 digs but the Lyons (8-7, 0-7 NEWMAC) fell 25-16, 25-13, 25-17 on the road.
