Thursday’s high schools: Easthampton softball manufactures win in extra innings

The Easthampton softball team manufactured a pair of eighth-inning runs and held on for a 9-8 victory over Central in Springfield Thursday.

Amanda Lambert (two hits, three runs) led off the inning with a bunt single and stole second base. She then took third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch for an 8-7 lead.

Avard then drew a one-out walk, stole second and took third on another groundout before scoring on an error.

Central (3-4) scored once in the bottom of the inning, but Easthampton (4-1) pitcher Caelin Mottor (three strikeouts, no walks) closed out her complete-game performance.

The Eagles, who were outhit 14-5, stole nine bases in the win.

Southwick 6, Holyoke Catholic 2 — Anna DeSimone had two of the Gaels’ (1-4) four hits in the loss at Holyoke Community College.

Megan Logan (one run) and Sidney Brosseau (one RBI) each added a hit.

Logan allowed four earned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out nine.

Baseball

Franklin Tech 10, Smith Vocational 2 — The Vikings (0-4) led 2-0 through four innings, but the Eagles (2-4) posted four runs in the fifth and six in the seventh to win in Northampton.

Jordan Castillo struck out 12 and walked five in the loss.

Jovan Ruiz, Jason Talbot and Drew Scheinost each had one hit for Smith Voke.

Minnechaug 9, Northampton 1 — Freshman Hunter Salem pitched 41∕3 innings of no-hit relief, but the Blue Devils (3-5) lost their third game in as many days.

Zack Goodwin-Boyd brought in the only run for Hamp with a groundout scoring David Konowitch.

Goodwin-Boyd, Konowitch, John Grimaldi, R.J. Ramsden and Joe Warner (first varsity hit) all singled.

Mahar Regional 9, Easthampton 2 — Grayson Nash (single) and Chris Starcun (sacrifice fly) each drove in a run for the Eagles (2-2, 1-2 Hampshire) in the road defeat.

Starcun and Shy Torres scored a run apiece for Easthampton, while Alan Gormley also had a hit.

Palmer 8, Gateway Regional 1 — Justin Edinger went 3-for-3 and scored the lone run for the Gators (1-4) in the home setback.

Jonathan Haskell (double), Geoff Sobotka and Ethan Gamble each picked up a hit for Gateway.

Frontier Regional 5, Hopkins Academy 4 — Both starting pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts and just five earned runs in complete-game performances as the Red Hawks (4-1, 3-0 Hampshire) edged the Golden Hawks (1-5, 0-3) in Hadley.

Ben Ruddock struck out 11 and gave up three earned in the win, while Tim Knightly fanned eight and allowed two earned in a tough-luck loss.

Ryan Hoar had three hits, knocked in a run and scored once for Frontier, with Matt Byrne driving in two and scoring once on a pair of hits.

Evan Delaney had two RBIs and Pat Knightly (two hits) scored twice for Hopkins. Zach Kelley also picked up an RBI.

Hampshire Regional 12, Holyoke Catholic 4 — The Raiders (3-2, 2-1 Bi-County) scored in every inning but one, including a five-run second in the victory in Chicopee.

Eddie Hagelstein had two hits, drove in three runs and scored twice. Scott Labrie (two hits, triple) scored four times and knocked in one, while Cody Payson doubled, tripled and had one RBI.

Tim Orzechowski had a hit, an RBI and a run scored for the Gaels (1-5, 1-4). Tom Heavren (run), Eddie Janis and Dorian Guidi picked up a hit apiece.

Dan Baldwin went four-plus innings to earn the win, allowing no earned runs on just one hit. Orzechowski took the loss despite giving up no earned runs in five frames.

Girls lacrosse

West Springfield 9, Amherst Regional 4 — Leah Goldman had a hand in each goal for the Hurricanes (1-5) on the road.

Goldman finished with two goals and two assists, while Sarah Mangels finished with one of each.

Taylor Bartmon scored once.

Katie Dunn made five saves.

Belchertown 12, Monson 10 — Kayla Panek scored four goals as the Orioles (3-4) won on the road.

Emma Jopson and Natalie Caney each had two goals, while Chloe Zinter, Emma Cyr, Jackie Soucia and Audrey Duhaime added one apiece.

Abbey Norden made 12 saves.

Boys lacrosse

Amherst Regional 15, West Springfield 1 — Kieran Presley scored four goals and Melvin Espinosa (assist), Donovan Riley and Alex LaRaja added three each as the Hurricanes (2-2) dominated on the road.

Drew Koslowski and Isaac Bass added one goal and two assists each, while Luke Allen and John Traester had one goal and one assist apiece.

Nick Johnson also scored once.

Will Barstow made four saves.

Westfield 6, Northampton 4 — Four different players scored for the Blue Devils (3-3) in the loss at home.

Will Lombardi, Ben Davis, Peter Higgins and Alex Zadworny each registered one goal.

Tyler Walsh made 15 saves.

Belchertown 14, Holyoke Catholic 2 — Alex Bachand scored four goals and had an assist as the Orioles (2-4) won at Nash Field in Chicopee.

Austin Duhaime (three goals, two assists) also had five points, while Jordan Auffrey (two, two) finished with four.

Alex Wordsworth and Ryan Dupont scored twice each, while Jake Downs had one goal.

Travis Greeley made six saves.

Joe McCoy and Brendan Bailey scored once each for the Gaels (1-4).

Volleyball

West Springfield 3, Belchertown 0 — The Orioles (2-6) were swept at home by game scores of 25-22, 25-14, 25-21.

Jordan Vigneault led Belchertown with nine kills, six digs and three blocks. Joshua Santos had six kills, four digs and a pair of aces, while Chase Nelson added three kills and two blocks.
