Friday’s colleges: UMass softball extends win streak to five with victory over Fordham
Freshman Taylor Carbon had three hits and three RBIs and the University of Massachusetts softball team turned a school-record four double plays in a 9-5 victory over Fordham at Sortino Field in Amherst Friday.
Katie Bettencourt had three RBIs on two hits as the Minutewomen (7-16, 4-1 Atlantic 10) won their fifth straight overall and 20th in a row at home.
Quianna Diaz-Patterson had a hit, two runs and an RBI in the win.
Amherst College 3, Hamilton 0 — Theresa Kelley and Arielle Doering combined for a two-hit shutout as the Lord Jeffs (17-5, 2-2 NESCAC West) won at home.
Donna Leet went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the win.
Springfield 8, WPI 0 (5); Springfield 3, WPI 2 — Brielle Engelbrecht of Granby had two hits, two runs and one RBI in the doubleheader for the Pride.
Vanderbilt 3, Mississippi 1 — Amherst native Kevin Ziomek struck out three, walked four and worked around three hits and one earned run as the No. 2-ranked Commodores (27-4) improved to 9-1 in the SEC with the road win.
Ziomek is 6-1 with a 1.75 ERA, 68 strikeouts and 23 walks in 67 innings.
Rhode Island 9, UMass 2 — Rob McLam was 4-for-4 and Nik Campero had two hits and two RBIs but the Minutemen (3-16, 0-4 Atlantic 10) fell on the road.
Amherst 11, Middlebury 0 — Brendon Hardin (run), Mike Odenwaelder (two runs) and Dan Pillitteri (two runs) each had three hits and two RBIs as the Lord Jeffs (10-5, 1-0 NESCAC) won at home.
Alex Hero had a home run and three RBIs in the win.
Bob Cook struck out nine, walked one and allowed one hit over 81∕3 innings to improve to 2-1.
UMass 12, Richmond 11 — Sam Rush and Katie Ferris each had three goals, while Cori Murray and Courtney McGrath added two apiece as the Minutewomen (10-2, 2-0 Atlantic 10) won at home.
