Wednesday’s colleges: Smith College sweeps two at Gene Cusic Classic

The Smith College softball team used strong pitching and 18 total hits to beat NYU-Poly 3-1 and College at Brockport 8-4 Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

Against NYU-Poly, Gina Martucci struck out seven and scattered seven hits for the win. Tori Brown at two hits and an RBI in the win.

Against Brockport, Caroline Kushner, Brown (two RBIs), Martucci (two RBIs) and Edie Richardson each had two hits.

Brown struck out two and worked around 10 hits for the win.

Men’s lacrosse

UMass 6, Lehigh 4 — Will Manny scored three goals as the Minutemen (4-4) shut down the 16th-ranked Mountain Hawks (5-4) in Bethlehem, Pa.

Kyle Smith (assist), Grant Whiteway and Dan Muller also scored, while Zach Oliveri made nine saves in the win.

Endicott 13, Amherst College 9 — Devin Acton had four goals, while Quinn Moroney added two but the Lord Jeffs (2-3) fell in Boston.

Women’s lacrosse

UMass 20, Holy Cross 5 — Katie Ferris (assist) scored six goals, while Sam Rush and Lauren Terracciano (assist) each had three goals as the Minutewomen (8-2) cruised in Worcester.

Cori Murray had two goals, while Rachel Vallarelli and Jamie Schiloski each made two saves in net for UMass.
