A new patrol officer whose position is funded with a federal grant has joined the Amherst Police Department.
Michael J. Barone, 25, of Greenfield was recently appointed by Police Chief Scott P. Livingstone.
Barone is a 2005 graduate of Holyoke Catholic High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Westfield State University.
The position is funded by a portion of a $300,000 award from the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women, a grant that is also covering the salary of a civilian advocate for domestic abuse survivors and pays for training officers in handling domestic incidents.
Prior to coming to Amherst, Barone was a police officer with the Provincetown Police Department and a cadet at the University of Massachusetts Police Department while a student at Westfield State.
Barone graduated last year from the Plymouth Police Academy as part of its 54th Recruit Officer Class.
