Amherst residents to get briefed on tree-trimming project

Tree trimming over power lines on Main Street and Pelham Road is expected to begin later this fall and extend into January.

An information session on this project, overseen by Western Massachusetts Electric Co., will be held as part of the next Public Shade Tree Committee, scheduled for Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the First Floor Meeting Room at Town Hall.

Hope Crolius, chairwoman of the committee, said Calvin Layton, a senior arborist for the utility company, will answer questions and provide information.

The session supplements a walk Layton led in August along the roadways.

Crolius said the tree work is not expected to be as extensive as South East Street, where hundreds of trees were removed and trimmed to “storm harden” the system.

The tree trimming will follow a similar process, though, including having the company get permission from private landowners to remove trees that aren’t in the right of way and working with Tree Warden Alan Snow to identify those in the public way that should come down.
