Northampton High School student artwork displayed at Forbes Library gallery
NORTHAMPTON — A special section of protest art will be among the offerings at the Northampton High School Student Art Show now on display at Forbes Library’s Hosmer Gallery.
Photography students will exhibit images from the “Rally for Creativity” in March where more than 200 NHS students rallied in support of arts and electives programs slated for school budget cuts next year.
Also on view will be artwork from students in the high school’s foundations classes, as well as ceramics, sculpture, drawings and paintings by honors art students.
The student art show was launched five years ago by Lisa Leary, chair of the high school’s Fine and Performing Arts Department, and Michael Jacobson-Hardy, Technology Education chair.
Since then, it has become a much-anticipated part of the library’s offerings, Hardy said. “They basically require us to do it now,” he quipped. “They tell us, May is your month.”
The gallery will host an opening reception for the NHS show Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. that will include a meet and greet with the artists.
The show runs through May 31. Gallery hours are Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hosmer Gallery is closed on Sundays and holidays.
