Second Northampton School Committee member, Michael Flynn, won’t seek re-election
A second city School Committee member has announced he will not seek re-election this fall.
At a board meeting earlier this month, Michael Flynn announced he will not run for another term for the at-large seat he holds. Municipal elections are set for Nov. 5 in Northampton, including school board seats in Wards 1, 3, 5 and 7.
“It’s time for me to move along to other things,” said Flynn, a former Massachusetts Teacher of the Year who has served on the board since 2006.
Flynn, who is now associate director of SummerMath for Teachers at Mount Holyoke College and a lecturer in the college Education Department, encouraged other residents to run for his seat. “It’s a really good experience,” he said.
Last month, veteran School Committee member Stephanie Pick announced she will not seek re-election to her seat in Ward 5.
In other school board news, members voted last week to accept a gift of $2,500 to the School Department from committee member Alden Bourne.
“My wife and I are very concerned about the budget cuts and wanted to help,” Bourne said.
The School Department is facing a shortfall estimated at $1.25 million in a $27.8 million budget for the fiscal year that begins in July.
