Leeds Elementary School in Florence holds book sale to benefit memorial for longtime teacher

A used book sale to fund a memorial for a beloved former teacher at Leeds School will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School on Locust Street.

Proceeds from the March-into-Reading sale will be used to purchase a memorial bench in honor of Marsha Ciaschini, who taught second grade at Leeds for 25 years before her death in 2010 from pancreatic cancer. She was 59.

“Her former students lovingly remember Mrs. Ciaschini for her passion for teaching and learning, as well as her respect and love for her learners at Leeds,” reads a flier written by the school PTO. “A stone bench symbolizes the permanence and unwavering support provided to every child taught by Mrs. Ciaschini.”

Plans are to dedicate the bench in June before this year’s fifth-graders, who are the last of Ciaschini’s students, move on to middle school.

Donations of gently used paperbacks or hardcovers for children or adults can be dropped off at Leeds School before Friday. Monetary donations to the memorial fund are also welcome. Checks can be made out to Leeds PTO and sent to Leeds Elementary School, 20 Florence Street, Leeds, MA 01053.

For more information, email the PTO at info@leedspto.org.
