Téa Spellacy launched a grand slam in the sixth inning to break open a tight game as the Belchertown softball team opened its season by defeating Amherst Regional 10-4 on the road Thursday.

Spellacy drove in four runs and scored twice, while Erin Reed-Coates (RBI) and Sarah Woodcock (run) each had a pair of hits for Belchertown (1-0). Sam Manitsas struck out five in a complete-game victory.

Cassie Jeschke hit a solo home run for the Hurricanes (0-1). Jazzy Moonstone (two hits) doubled in a pair of runs, while Cassie Long went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

Ally Faulstick pitched six innings and fanned five in her first varsity start.

Boys lacrosse

South Hadley 15, East Longmeadow 4 — The Tigers (1-0) opened their season with an impressive independent road victory.

Sam Duda (four goals, two assists) and Evan Marcus (three, three) each posted six points for South Hadley, while Ryan Dickinson scored three goals with two assists.

TJ Fitzell had two goals and an assist. Tom Dowd and Tom Crotty each had one of each, and Griffin Fitzell added a tally.

Justin Pontz made 11 saves in the win.

Girls lacrosse

Belchertown 16, Cathedral 0 — Emma Jopson had four goals, while Kayla Panek (assist) added three as the Orioles (1-0, 1-0 Valley League) cruised to a season-opening win on the road.

Kate Bowers and Brea Allen each had two goals, while Meaghan Foley (assist), Chloe Ziner (assist), Natale Caney (three assists), Kat Lowe and Audrey Duhaime (assist) each had one tally.

Abbey Norden made three saves in the shutout.

Boys volleyball

Belchertown 3, Commerce 0 — Nick Wallace and Jordan Vigneault had three aces apiece in leading the Orioles (1-0) to a victory in Springfield by game scores of 25-11, 25-21, 26-24.
