Last week, many of the dancers who will take the stage tonight to perform in “The Nutcracker” at Northampton’s Academy of Music gathered for one of their final rehearsals for the classic ballet. Preparations for this weekend’s six performances began several months ago in the Pioneer Valley Ballet’s studio space in the Eastworks building in Easthampton.

The performances will mark the 32nd year that PVB has presented the ballet for audiences in this area. Some of the dancers have been in “The Nutcracker” every year for much of their young lives, while others will be making their first appearances. This year’s cast includes dozens of dancers from western Massachusetts as well as guest artists from the Carolina Ballet.

Founded in 1972 by Gail Giere Collins, PVB offers young dancers opportunities to perform at the preprofessional level and to experience the joys of movement and music through the study of classical ballet. Thomas Vacanti and Maryanne Kodzis are the company’s current artistic directors.

For ticket information go to www.PioneerValleyBallet.org or to www.AcademyOfMusicTheatre.com or call the Academy box office at 584-8435.
