PILEATED WOODPECKER

Rail Trail, Amherst

Photograph and text by Anne E. Ely of South Hadley

This pileated woodpecker had been pecking away for insects on a fallen tree in a ditch along the side of the trail. Unable to get a clear shot, I was looking for an opening when he suddenly flew up to a tree right in front of me. I managed to get this shot before he took off again. The photo was taken with my hand-held DSLR camera using a medium length telephoto lens.

Anne Ely is affiliated with the Robert Floyd Photo Gallery, 2 East St., Southampton. Other nature images are on view there Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m.
