Route 9, Hadley

Photograph and text by Anne E. Ely of South Hadley

I’ve frequently seen red-tailed hawks in the area of Applebee’s and Staples on Route 9 in Hadley. On this day last fall when I came out of Staples, there he was, perched on a light pole, feathers blowing in the breeze. I quickly grabbed my digital camera with its 200 mm zoom lens, and when he didn’t seem to mind posing, I went back to my car for my tripod. At one point he flew to another pole. I followed and was able to get almost directly below where he was perching, at which point he peered down at me, giving me a close-up look at his beak and talons. Had I been a field mouse, I think I would have dashed for cover.

Anne Ely is affiliated with the Robert Floyd Photo Gallery, 2 East St., College Highway, Southampton. Other nature images are on view there Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 1 to 6 p.m.
