Amherst College student vote supports changing ‘Lord Jeff’ mascot

AMHERST — Current Amherst College students overwhelmingly support replacing Lord Jeff as the college’s unofficial mascot, according to poll results released Thursday by the Association of Amherst Students, the school’s student government association. Students voted 1,338 to 268 to change the mascot, according to the student government announcement. Meanwhile, many alumni have written in support of Lord Jeff. Class Senator Virginia Hassell, a 22-year-old senior from Franklin, Virginia, said the poll was open only to students — who got one vote each over a 24-hour period. “We actually got over 1,600 students to vote and there’s a little over 1,800 students at the school,” she …
