UMass to begin limiting outdoor events starting Tuesday

UMass, working with the town of Amherst’s health department, is restricting these campus-sponsored events as a precaution against Eastern equine encephalitis, which is carried by mosquitoes that breed and typically bite during the dusk and early evening.

Already, campus departments are scheduling events either indoors or earlier in the day.

Amherst is at moderate risk for EEE, according to the state Department of Public Health. If this risk status is elevated, more restrictions could be put in place at UMass.

Amherst officials announced Thursday that the schedules for sports teams and other recreational activities were being adjusted in advance of mosquito season.

Members of the campus community are being asked to limit evening outdoor activities and to take precautions such as using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and long pants, and avoiding areas where mosquitoes are prevalent. Both University Health Services and the University Store have insect repellant.

In addition, the grounds staff is applying larvicide to areas of standing water to prevent mosquito breeding.
