Whately home uninhabitable after lightning strike
WHATELY — A lightning bolt struck a Whately home early Wednesday, scorching the roof and displacing its three residents.
According to Whately Fire Chief John Hannum, at about 3:22 a.m. Wednesday, lightning sparked the wooden roof of the log cabin home at 17 Laurel Mountain Road.
The two parents and young child were awakened by the thunder and escaped the home safely.
The fire damaged parts of a ceiling and walls and the eaves.
Work on the roof had begun Wednesday. The home has been condemned until the repairs are complete.
About 50 firefighters responded from Whately, Hatfield, Northampton, Old Deerfield, South Deerfield and Conway. They contained the fire within an hour, Hannum said.
