A Look Back

∎ The Prophylactic Brush Co. has been awarded second place in the contest for the Grand Trophy Award by the industrial Safety Committee of the Associated Industries of Massachusetts. The committee granted this award on the basis of the remarkable improvement in the frequency of accidents at the local plant.

∎ Throughout the city of Northampton, man’s best friend underwent the adjustment from freedom to confinement with the beginning of the restraining period ordered by the City Council. The action followed numerous reports of dog packs molesting deer in the area.

∎ The First Annual Bikini Contest, organized by University of Massachusetts fraternity Delta Upsilon, never got off the ground last night because of complaints the event was sexist and offensive. Two groups of protesters put enough pressure on The Pink Cadillac on Route 9, the planned site of the event, to convince the bar to cancel the contest.

∎ Members of the Amherst Housing Authority today stood solemnly next to the charred remains of the historic Keet House while firefighters hosed down smoldering timbers. A suspicious early morning blaze brought to a dramatic end a two-and-a-half-year struggle to save the house from demolition and restore it.

∎ Forty Easthampton city employees have agreed to participate in a furlough or pay deferral program — the first such effort announced in the region and one that city officials say could save more than $50,000 or one or two jobs in the next fiscal year.

∎ About 75 people, many of them neighbors of the Glendale Road Landfill, were at a meeting Monday demanding answers about the potential hazard in what residents say is an unbearable odor emanating from the landfill.
