Southampton’s temporary co-clerks to put on Town Election Monday

— Voters will decide whether to give their final approval to a project to replace the William E. Norris School roof at a town election Monday. Polls will be open noon to 8 p.m. at the Town Hall at 210 College Highway.

Residents approved the $1.8 million to repair the leaky roof at a Feb. 5 special Town Meeting, but it also requires a ballot vote because it involves borrowing, according to Hampshire Regional School District Superintendant Craig Jurgensen.

Overseeing the election will be the temporary co-clerks who are filling in since Town Clerk Eileen Couture and Assistant Town Clerk Ruth Bernier both went on sick leave on March 4 and 5 due to health issues.

The Select Board voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint as co-clerks part-time Chesterfield Town Clerk Sandra Wickland and Southampton resident and Longmeadow Town Clerk Katherine Ingram. The board and co-clerks agreed they would receive $15.90 per hour.

At the Tuesday meeting, Select Board member Edward J. Cauley said that Couture and Bernier were supposed to come home from the hospital sometime this week but he did not know when they would be able to return to work.
