One dead in head-on crash Friday on Route 5 in Northampton
NORTHAMPTON — An early evening head-on collision on Route 5 in Northampton claimed the life of at least one person Friday.
Mary Carey, a spokeswoman for the Northwestern district attorney’s office, said one person was confirmed dead, while another suffered “nonlife-threatening” injuries after a two-car, head-on collision that took place about 5:30 p.m.
The identity of the person killed was not made available Friday night.
Carey said the accident happened a half-mile from the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center at 1 Atwood Drive. Northampton police blocked off a section of the road from the Clarion south to East Street, below the Oxbow of the Connecticut River.
The Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section and the state police detective unit assigned to the DA’s office were working with Northampton police at the scene Friday night.
Vehicles were backed up on the off-ramp at Exit 18 as police directed traffic north on Route 5.
A roadblock remained in place on Route 5 for almost five hours as police worked at the scene.
