Raymond Gosselin of Division Street, Easthampton, reports that a 4-month-old mongrel pup with white feet and white tipped tail and wearing a collar, strayed to his home on Saturday night and that he has cared for the pup rather than turn it away in the storm.

Miss Shirley M. Hardwick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hardwick of 809 Ryan Road, has accepted a Civil Service appointment as clerk-stenographer in the Department of Health, Education and Public Welfare in Washington, D.C. She graduated in June from Northampton High School.

A packed Zoning Board of Appeals meeting heard people speak for and against the Hotel Northampton’s proposed conference center for over four hours last night, but board members continued the meeting without a ruling.

Today is the Great American Smokeout, the day smokers are exhorted to stop cold-turkey for 24 hours. But for some Hampshire County merchants, the thought of giving up the money smokers spend on their habit could be just as traumatic as quitting smoking.

The U.S. Senate overwhelmingly approved the most sweeping government shake-up in a half-century on Tuesday, passing a bill that will create a new Cabinet department responsible for reducing the nation’s vulnerability to terrorist attacks. The new department will be called The Department of Homeland Security.

Workers at the Northampton Nursing Home on Bridge Road reached a tentative agreement with management Monday night that could resolve a nearly six-month dispute over pay and staffing. The main issue was wages.
