Northampton, Springfield investigate back-to-back Walgreens robberies for painkillers
NORTHAMPTON — Northampton police say they are reviewing a robbery at a Walgreens pharmacy in Springfield 11 days before a Walgreens was robbed in Northampton. In both cases, a man fled with a supply of the pain medication oxycodone.
“The matter is under investigation and we are aware of that (Springfield) case,” said Northampton Police Lt. Jody Kasper Tuesday night.
She said Springfield police have shared video footage of a man suspected of robbing at gunpoint a Walgreens on Sumner Avenue in Springfield Sept. 22. In that case, a man ordered a pharmacist to hand over what turned out to be about 600 oxycodone pills, according to The Republican newspaper of Springfield.
Oct. 3 at a Walgreens at the Northampton Medical Center in Florence, a man passed a pharmacy employee a threatening note demanding that the employee turn over the pharmacy’s supply of oxycodone. Northampton police said the note mentioned a gun, though the robber did not display one. The pharmacy employee handed over the oxycodone, though police declined to reveal how much. The man, who police said was dressed all in black with his face covered, fled on foot.
