ICE FORMATIONS

Amethyst Brook, Pelham

Photograph and text by Meredith Jones of Pelham

On Jan. 27, a near-zero day, I went out to photograph ice formations on Amethyst Brook in Pelham. Brook ice is tricky: It looks frozen but often has rapidly flowing water underneath. Since the formations were in the unfrozen center of the brook, I squiggled on my stomach on the frozen section to get close — with my weight spread out flat, there was less chance of falling through. As a test I did it first without camera, then with. While I nearly froze to death, this photo was one of the results. Created with a D-SLR camera and a short telephoto lens.

Meredith Jones is affiliated with the Robert Floyd Photo Gallery, 2 East St., College Highway, Southampton. Other nature images are on view there Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m.
