Valentine’s Day by the numbers
∎ The average American is expected to spend about $130 on Valentine’s Day, up $5 from a year ago, according to the National Retail Federation.
∎ Candy accounts for $66.
∎ Flowers ring up at $47.
∎ Jewelry amounts to $26.
∎ Clothing and gift card spending, at $20 each, round out the list.
∎ Men spend an average of $175 compared to women at $88, the survey found.
∎ According to the Society of American Florists, 224 million flowers were produced for Valentine’s Day last year, making it the top single-day holiday for florists.
∎ Sales are higher during Christmas and Mother’s Day, but those holidays stretch over a longer period.
