Over 500 children from the Northampton area enjoyed Santa Claus’ arrival on Saturday. There was a parade centered around a horse-drawn wagon carrying Santa and his two elves, Miss Sallie Anne Dunn and Miss Beverly Bergeron.

John M. Buteau, head of the school system’s French department, was principal speaker at a conference at Fontbonne College in St. Louis, Mo., over the weekend. He also conducted a workshop. Mr. Buteau teaches French summers at Middlebury College.

Saying the loss to the city is greater than to them, representatives of the Hotel Northampton last night withdrew variance requests essential to their proposed $20 million expansion project, killing the project in its current form. Eric B. Gervais, attorney for the hotel, blamed the City Council for postponing its decision on a block grant application until its 1988 season.

The appointment of Penelope G. Kim as planning director, a resolution asking the University of Massachusetts to provide more student housing, and money for new dugout fences and benches at the city’s ballfields top tonight’s City Council agenda.

The traditional four-year physical education requirement at Northampton High School would be replaced by new “wellness” classes under a proposal the school committee is expected to vote on Dec. 12. The new requirement would consist of two semester-long wellness classes that combine elements of both health and physical education.

A federal judge ruled on Monday that a lawsuit calling the MCAS test illegal and unconstitutional belongs in state court. U.S. District Court Judge Michael Ponsor said he would abstain from taking any action in the lawsuit for now because it deals with too many issues involving state law.
