Miss Nancy Blackall, daughter of Robert M. Blackall of Florence Rd., left Sept. 29 for Bogota, Colombia, where she will serve as a member of the CARE staff which is administering the Peace Corps project in Colombia.

Gov. John A. Volpe will be in Northampton on Saturday afternoon in his quest for re-election, it was announced today by his Northampton co-ordinator, Dr. Hugh W. Edmonds. A motorcade will meet him at the Hadley bridge and will escort him into town where he will greet shoppers in the business section.

Longtime boys’ varsity basketball coach Joseph J. Mantegna won his job back last night with the help of supporters who intervened with the School Committee. The board voted 7 to 2 to reappoint Mantegna for three years, reversing a tie vote last month that temporarily stripped the 46-year-old resident of 156 Chestnut St. in Florence, of his coaching job.

About 100 friends and supporters of City Council candidate Mary Ford gathered at a fund-raising reception yesterday in the Justin Morgan Room in the Hotel Northampton. Ford is the chairman of the city Democratic Committee, and a member of the Democratic State Committee.

Jackson Street School first-grade teacher Mary Cowhey learned on Tuesday that she is the recipient of the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award. Cowhey is the first city teacher to win the award, which honors “exceptional educational talent, outstanding accomplishments and an engaging and inspiring presence.”

Construction of a medical building has been proposed at the site of a former gas sation on North King Street, near the exit of Interstate 91 and the Hatfield town lines. Pioneer Spine and Sport Physicians, which operates five offices in the region, including one in Florence, is proposing to demolish the gas station structure and build a 10,000-square-foot building.
