Final registration for the Jay-cee-ette Babysitting School has more than doubled the original figures with 100 boys and girls attending the session led by Safety Officer Frank Lucier at Northampton High School, according to Mrs. Joan Berniche. Officer Lucier covered a vast area of do’s and don’ts for the students and parents.

Northampton Lodge of Elks will hold its annual Farmer’s Night on Wednesday at the Elk’s Home on Center St. This has been a popular fall event because of the smorgasbord and roast beef dinner that will start the fall and winter Wednesday night events.

School Committee members said today Joseph J. Mantegna could be reappointed as the high school basketball coach tonight, but only with certain stipulations. Two of the five school committee members who voted against Mantegna’s reappointment said this morning they might approve him, if certain conditions are met. They refused to discuss the conditions.

The executive director of the county’s largest provider of community homes for the mentally retarded has resigned in the wake of financial problems at the agency. Thomas D. Osborn, executive director of Community Homes for the past two years, resigned effective tomorrow, board members said yesterday.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Mitt Romney assailed his opponent Shannon O’Brien for referring to large corporations as “dinosaurs” and said the remark shows O’Brien is out of touch with the state’s business community.

In a clamor of pots and wooden spoons, about 250 people made their outrage about the threat of military action in Iraq loud and clear Monday night as they flooded downtown. Some cried out while clutching signs that blasted President George W. Bush and his willingness to strike Saddam Hussein’s regime.
