Michael Crawley celebrates 100th birthday

Michael Crawley, a former Northampton resident who lives at Linda Manor in Haydenville, will celebrate his 100th birthday on Feb. 21.

According to his family, Crawley still enjoys taking to the dance floor, reading his many books, and attending weddings and other family gatherings.

He says one of the secrets to longevity is the pleasure of the simple things in life: a nice cup of tea with a loved one, a walk outdoors and friendly conversations with everyone he meets. He always keeps his shoes shined to look his best. His Irish wit and English-gentleman ways have touched many lives, both in Northampton and across the pond.

Crawley emigrated to the United States with his wife and two children in 1949 from the United Kingdom, by boat. He came to the U.S. after military service in England during World War II, and started working odd jobs to help support his wife and six children. After earning a degree at night school, he worked as an occupational therapist at Northampton State Hospital. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the St. Patrick’s Association.

His daughters are Teresa Maginnis of Northampton, married to Bill Maginnis; Anne Brown of Swampscott, married to Myles Brown; Alice O’Brien of Northampton, married to Roger O’Brien; and the late Maura Brandt. His sons are Joseph Crawley of West Springfield, married to Jackie; and Shaun Crawley of Fayetteville, Ga., married to Connie. He has 10 cherished grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who continue to dance with him.

A sister, Mary, lives in London, England, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was married for 65 years to the late Mary Cahillane Crawley, who passed away in Dec. 2009 at age 94. They shared over 65 years of true love and dedication, made frequent trips to Ireland and England, and hosted family here.

People are invited to send Michael a birthday card, addressed to Michael Crawley, Linda Manor, 349 Haydenville Road, Leeds, Ma. 01053.
