Noise complaint marks start of new semester in Amherst — and other area police news

The largest gathering was located Friday at 12:49 a.m., when police responded to a home at the intersection of Northampton Road and South Prospect Street where 30 college-age people were on the garage roof, said Police Detective Michael Forcum.

A 20-year-old Lowell woman, who is a UMass student, was issued a $300 ticket for violating the town’s noise bylaw after police determined she was responsible for inviting the guests, Forcum said. Police had gotten an earlier complaint about noise at the home at 12:07 a.m.

Police also issued North Pleasant Street residents warnings at 1:26 a.m. after loud music and voices were heard coming from their home.

Meanwhile, two college students living at Townehouse Apartments on Meadow Street called police at 2:20 a.m. to report a break-in to their home. They had left their dwelling two hours earlier and kept the slider unlocked, returning to find a television set, Xbox gaming console and laptop stolen, Forcum said. Police are investigating.


∎ Ann Marie Nathan, 62, of 33 Kellogg Ave., unit 25, was issued a citation for failure to use care in stopping after the vehicle she was driving on South Pleasant Street Thursday at 8:37 a.m. rearended a vehicle driven by Maura E. Keene, 61, of 25 Dennis Drive, police said.

Nathan complained of chest pain and was transported by Amherst Fire Departmemt ambulance to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton for treatment, police said.

Damage to both vehicles was minor, according to police.


∎ Juan Gabriel Rivera, 27, of 49 Old South St. Apt. 201, was arrested Thursday at 11:31 p.m. at his apartment in the McDonald House on a charge of intimidating a witness, according to police.

∎ A city woman reported Thursday at 4:42 p.m. that someone had dug up and stolen a large hydrangea plant from her rear yard, according to police. The shrubbery was valued at $100.
