Monday night bingo has been growing steadily since returning in April to the VFW Post 8006 in Florence, with 53 people trying their luck last week. Cued by announcer Sam Adams’ measured pace, all eyes turned in concert, alternating between their bingo cards and the front of the room where a small black-and-white television set displayed the newest ball for all to see. Some of the more experienced players set up shrines of good luck tokens around their cards and had a rainbow of colored markers at the ready.

The Florence VFW bingo night isn’t the only game in town. Irma Croteau of Northampton attends a circuit of three or four weekly games including ones at the Elks Lodge #997 in Florence, the Knights of Columbus in Holyoke, and at the former St. John Cantius parish hall in Northampton where she also volunteers. Croteau maintains a good attitude about the game, sometimes known as beano: “Sometimes we don’t win ... and sometimes we do.”
