TEEN RAISES MONEY
FOR DIABETES

Clara Thatcher, a Hampshire Regional High School student from Cummington, has raised $3,225 for Cooley Dickinson Hospital’s diabetes education program.

Her father, Charles Thatcher, died in 2009 from complications of diabetes. In his memory, Clara Thatcher, along with her sister, Kayla and her mother, Mandy Caputo, established the Charles’ Angels Walk for Diabetes Education fundraiser.

The June 1 event at Hampshire Regional High School raised more than twice Clara’s original goal. She presents her gift to the hospital today.

The CEDE program at Cooley Dickinson Hospital teaches those living with diabetes how to best manage their health through exercise, nutrition, medications and follow-up care.

FAMILY TO FAMILY COURSE

A free, 12-week course for family caregivers of those with severe mental illnesses begins Sept. 7.

HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT

A hospice volunteer training class will begin Sept. 11 in Holyoke.

Hospice Life Care, a nonprofit program of the Holyoke Visiting Nurses Association, is accepting applications for the class.

The five-week training is held Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at The Loomis House Nursing Center in Holyoke.

Hospice volunteers provide a listening ear and companionship to terminally ill patients and their families, visiting with them in the home and in nursing facilities throughout Hampden and Hampshire counties.

Interested individuals attend the training program and receive monthly support and education throughout their volunteer experience. The training is free.

Hospice Life Care also seeks individuals with licensed therapy pets and professionals trained in reiki. Please contact Leslie Hennessey at (413)533-3923 or lhennessey@holyokevna.org to begin the application process.
