Wednesday’s high schools: South Hadley edges Amherst in early season boys lacrosse showdown

With just over five minutes left in regulation, Tom Crotty scored his only goal of the game to give the South Hadley boys lacrosse team a 9-8 road win over league rival Amherst Regional on Wednesday.

Goalie Justin Pontz (11 saves) came up with several crucial stops in the final minutes to protect the lead for the Tigers (2-0, 1-0 Valley Wheel).

The game was closely contested throughout, with neither team opening up more than a two-goal lead. Ryan Dickinson scored a game-high four goals to help South Hadley erase a 6-5 halftime deficit and establish control early in the third quarter.

Melvin Espinosa (assist), Nick Johnson and Donovan Riley scored two goals apiece for the Hurricanes (1-1, 0-1), while Drew Kosloski and Kieran Presley each added one tally and Isaac Bass had an assist.

Evan Marcus, Sam Duda, Jordan Brunelle and Tom Dowd each scored a goal for the Tigers, while TJ Fitzell and Dickinson also picked up an assist apiece.

Amherst goalie Will Barstow finished with 15 saves.

Cathedral 5, Belchertown 3 — Austin Duhaime, Ryan Dupont and Alex Wordsworth each tallied once for the Orioles (0-2, 0-1 Valley League) in the home defeat.

Alex Bachand picked up an assist for Belchertown, while Travis Greeley stopped six shots in goal.


Belchertown 7, Northampton 6 — A six-run top of the fifth propelled the Orioles (3-0) to the road victory, their third straight to start the season.

Samantha Manitsas picked up the complete-game win, allowing six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. She also knocked in a pair of runs at the plate and scored once.

Hannah Flink went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run for Belchertown, while Emily Silva added a hit and a run scored.

Mary Greco went 3-for-4, including a two-run home run for the Blue Devils (0-1). In the circle, Greco fanned six and walked two in taking the loss.

Also for Hamp, Emilie Baldwin (RBI, run), Kristin Gross (run) and Maya Kerstetter picked up a hit apiece.


Hopkins Academy 11, Granby 2 — Tim Knightly earned the win on the mound and was perfect at the plate as the Golden Hawks (1-0) opened their campaign with a home victory.

The senior righty pitched the first six innings and allowed two runs on just a pair of hits, striking out eight and walking seven. He also was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Even Delaney had three hits, including a solo home run, and scored twice. Zach Kelley drove in three runs, Nick Bernard knocked in a pair and Brett Morrison doubled home a run.

Zach Funk (run) and Shane Hollenbeck (RBI) had the only hits for the Rams (0-2). Jake Whitacre added an RBI and Andy Gifford scored once.

Funk took the loss, giving up 10 runs in five innings. He fanned four.

Palmer 3, South Hadley 0 — The Tigers (0-2) were no-hit at home by Palmer’s Tyler Wilson, who struck out 13 over seven innings.

Joe Ciolek took the tough-luck loss, giving up just one unearned run in four innings. He allowed three hits and struck out eight.

Ciolek, Nate Flachs and Peter Luchini drew walks as the only South Hadley hitters to reach base.

West Springfield 11, Belchertown 0 — Trevor Erb picked up the only base hit for the Orioles (0-1) in a season-opening loss at home.

Jim Kusnierz allowed four runs and struck out five over four innings of work.

Boys ultimate

Amherst College 13, Amherst Regional 8 — Charlie Davies (two goals, one assist) and Lucas Dani (one goal, two assists) registered three points apiece as the Hurricanes (0-1) lost their season opener to the Jeffs.
