Shel Horowitz: Better parenting would make world a better place

To the editor:

What do school bullying, the Newtown massacre, the illegal and immoral Iraq War and the bellicose posturing of North Korea have in common?

I think a case can be made that all the perpetrators suffer from a combination of low self-esteem, poor training in values and a high “macho” factor.

Why does our society require a license to cut hair, but throw young kids into parenting without any training? If we were taught how to raise kids with high self-esteem, strong communication skills and ability to work out conflicts without resorting to violence, the world would be a better place.

In the meantime, if the stricter gun law that passed in Connecticut is the best we can do right now (a sad statement), let’s at least get that done state by state, and work around Congress’ utter dysfunction.
