UMass diver Michaela Butler sets school record, finishes fourth at NCAA women’s 1-meter springboard
University of Massachusetts diver Michaela Butler set a school record Thursday evening and came up just short of medaling at the NCAA women’s 1-meter springboard championship at the Indiana University Natatorium.
The junior compiled a total score of 333.45 to finish fourth overall and 2.31 points short of third. Arizona’s Samantha Pickens won the gold at 348.45.
Butler came in sixth in the afternoon preliminary round at 309.05 to earn a spot in the finals. That score established the UMass record at the time, but lasted only a few hours.
Her fourth- and fifth-round dives both received scores over 61 and put her in second place heading into the last round.
Amherst 5, Endicott 2 — The battery of pitcher John Cook and catcher Conner Gunn propelled the Jeffs (5-2) to a victory over previously unbeaten Endicott at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in Lakeland, Fla.
Cook, a sophomore left-hander, allowed a single earned run on six hits and struck out nine over seven innings. Freshman Gunn hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot in the sixth inning to put Amherst up for good.
Also for the Jeffs, Dan Pillitteri went 3-for-4 while Mike Odenwaelder had two hits and an RBI and Nolan Stewart added a run-scoring single.
Amherst 13, Framingham State 4 (5); Amherst 3, Bowdoin 0 — The Jeffs (6-2) showed off their hitting and pitching prowess in sweeping both games at the NTC Games in Clermont, Fla.
A nine-run third inning led to a mercy shortened win over Framingham. Donna Leet (three runs, RBI), Reilly Horan (three RBIs), Brianna Cook (two RBIs) and Carolyn Miller (RBI) all had three hits apiece. Arielle Doering pitched four innings to pick up the victory.
Senior Theresa Kelley fired a one-hit shutout against Bowdoin, striking out 10 while facing just one batter over the minimum.
Leet and Miller each knocked in a run, while Idalia Friedson (single) stole home on a double steal. Kelsey Ayers also scored a run for Amherst.
University of New England 5, Smith 2; Wisconsin-Superior 3, Smith 0 — The Pioneers (4-4) dropped a pair on the final day of the Gene Cusic Classic at Fort Myers, Fla.
Tori Brown (two hits) and Brittany Purington (single) both knocked in a run in the loss to UNE, which scored three times in the seventh to snap a 2-2 tie. Caroline Kushner (double) and Joanna Giordano each scored a run for Smith.
Gina Martucci struck out three in the complete-game loss.
In the shutout loss to Wisconsin-Superior, the Pioneers had all three of their hits in the second inning as Edie Richardson, Giordano and Purington each singled to load the bases.
Brown allowed just one earned run and fanned three in a complete-game defeat.
Amherst 18, Elizabethtown 8 — Senior Marta Randall scored seven goals to lead the No. 12 Jeffs (3-2) to a win Thursday at Elizabethtown, Pa.
Elizabeth Ludlow scored three times for Amherst, with Prescilla Tyler and Sarah Spector added a pair apiece. Hillary Densen (two assists), Alex Philie (assist), Meghan Mills and Devin O’Connor each tallied once, and Caroline Holliday contributed an assist.
Christy Forrest (five saves) and Katelyn Salerno (none) each played a half in goal.
