Planning for cooperative food market for Amherst continues
AMHERST — A group working toward establishing a cooperative grocery store with locally grown food meets Tuesday evening.
The open steering committee for the Amherst Community Market will be held at the Amherst Room at Jones Library from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The meeting will include updates and discussion about the project’s progress and ways to do more outreach to the community.
The market is proposed as a worker- and consumer-owned cooperative that will have an assortment of sustainably raised food items. Organizers recently secured a fiscal sponsorship from the Cooperative Fund of New England, which will coordinate an effort to raise $20,000 by the end of this summer to pay for a market and feasibility study.
A time line for the food cooperative indicates a business plan may not be done until February 2014 and a site secured until January 2015.
