The state’s Office of Consumer Affairs just issued an advisory titled “Tis the Season for Package Thefts.” Here’s its advice about how to prevent deliveries from getting stolen:

Part 1: Choose a shipping option that includes tracking and delivery confirmation and also requires a signature; give specific instructions about where the package should be left; ship packages to your workplace, if your employer permits; ask a neighbor to be on the lookout for deliveries; purchase extra insurance.

Part 2: If you suspect a package has been stolen (or lost), check out-of-the-way spots like hedges and porches; ask neighbors if the package was accidentally delivered to them (or if they saw a package delivered to you); contact the person or business sending the package to make sure it was actually sent; if it was, contact the USPS, UPS, FedEx or other delivery service. Finally, if the package doesn’t turn up, file a police report. And if you paid by credit card, contact your credit card company.
