Land auction on South East Street in Amherst pushed back to January

Last month none of the 14 people who took out bid packages responded to the opening bid of $500,000.

The foreclosure auction is scheduled to resume Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. The auction is being administered by Aaron Posnik and Co. Inc.

The land that is subject to the auction covers 7.5 acres at 650 and 652 South East St. and was most recently owned by Scott Nielsen, whose company, Levi-Nielsen Co., obtained a special permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals in 2008 to develop a project known as Strawberry Field. That development was to have featured 17 condominiums, including five single-family homes and six duplexes.

It is unclear whether the special permit could be transferred to a buyer.

During the initial auction, members of an organization called the South Amherst Conservation Association were present. They have been working to protect the open land adjacent to the Norwottuck Rail Trail. Carol Gray, a member of the association, was on site again Monday morning.

The parcels combined are assessed at $277,300. There is also more than $10,000 in back taxes owed, according to town records.
