Time for a return of common sense on guns
To the editor:
I hear a lot of talk blaming the one who actually pulls the trigger, or the mental health system that didn’t do its job, or the lack of funding for mental health interventions, or ... or ....
I pause and wonder: Could it be that the core of the problem is a society that fiercely defends the right to make, sell, carry and use at will these instruments of maiming and death?
I hope and expect getting assault guns banned from public sales should happen with very little resistance now. How tragic that we have waited so long. But while we’re examining what is and isn’t within our control, handguns should also be questioned. Why should it be a “right” for everyone to carry something whose only purpose is to maim and kill?
This is an illusion of safety and defense but actually causes the opposite: serious potential of injury and death, intentionally or unintentionally, by the rightful owner or by someone else.
Did your hearts break? Do your hearts ache? Of course.
So let us be a true community and work to make our laws protect our most vulnerable, including children and the mentally imbalanced. May we be both compassionate and wise. May we use the commonsense we’ve been given. May these beautiful people not be forgotten.
