Amherst police issued citations to driver who struck boy exiting school bus

Nikhil P. Kapur, 32, was issued civil citations for failure to use care in starting and failure to yield for a bus with emergency lights activated following the accident, which took place at 2:43 p.m. on South East Street near Fort River School, said Amherst Police Detective Lt. Ronald Young.

Kapur was driving west on South East Street Extension, past Northampton Cooperative Bank, when he came to a stop and then turned onto South East Street, striking the boy, Young said. Kapur remained at the scene and was interviewed by officers investigating the accident.

Young said the boy, whose name is not being released, was transported by Amherst Fire Department ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. The boy was treated and is recovering at home, according to school officials.

“Fortunately we averted a more serious injury here,” Young said.

Young said police are reminding drivers that they must stop for school buses when their lights are activated. Drivers should be alert for children as they get on and off buses, especially at this time of year as snowstorms may begin and sight lines along roads may be compromised, Young said.
