GOP rape platform disregards rights

To the editor:

Some conservative Republicans, like Todd Akin of Missouri and Richard Mourdock of Indiana, in unguarded moments, make truly outrageous comments about rape. Given a chance to reconsider their statements, they plead a misunderstanding or misrepresentation of their position, but in the end, they stick to their misogyny and/or certain knowledge of our creator’s wishes. Given the nature of our political process, these individuals are first ostracized by their parties and contemporaries, but then expediency dictates they must be supported despite their obnoxious statements because election priorities take precedence over decency, respect and individual beliefs.

What should we make of this disregard for individual rights, women’s rights, civil rights? Rape is not another legitimate form of conception; it is a horrendous, violent assault, which is not acceptable in any situation.

Unfortunately, this disregard is reflected in the Republican Party platform and its candidates who run on it. We must vote to prevent these individuals from taking over our options and lives.
