Town seeks to fill open seats on boards

The Appropriations Committee seeks a volunteer to fill a vacancy on its nine-member panel. The committee makes recommendations to Town Meeting members on all financial warrant articles, including department budget requests and those for capital spending.

The body reviews budgets, meets with department heads regarding proposed spending and recommends sources of funding, including taxation, borrowing or transfers from available funds. The committee holds a public hearing before every regular and special Town Meeting and makes a report to Town Meeting on each spending proposal.

To apply, fill out an online application on the town’s website.

Applications will be accepted by the Appropriations Committee until the position is filled.

Meanwhile, the Select Board seeks members for the newly created Buttery Brook Park Building Committee, to analyze and evaluate options for improving the park.

The town has $375,000 earmarked for this project and a grant application is being reviewed by the state for up to $800,000.

The committee will explore options on the scope and design of the project and make recommendations. If the grant is approved, the design must be completed by June 30. The committee will also oversee the project during construction, scheduled to begin next July. Applicants should submit a letter of interest to the Select Board at 116 Main St., or email Selectboard@southhadleyma.gov. Online applications are posted on the town’s website.

Columbus Day sales
The South Hadley Falls Neigborhood Association reports results of its first Columbus Day tag sale Oct. 7 and 8 were “amazing.”

“We had lots of customers both days and sold quite a lot of stuff,” said Gillian Woldorf, co-chair of the group with Adam Roberts. “We raised over $475 for the neighborhood association’s future activities.”

Woldorf said the group is particularly grateful to Barb and Ken Merchant, who allowed the first floor of their house to be “taken over” by items donated in the days leading up to the sale, and to Robert and Vero Gonzalez and fellow residents of 44 Lamb St. where the sale was held.

The group’s tag sale crew included Sarah Etelman, Deb Bergeron, Timna Tarr, Rich Germain, Sadie Germain, Select Board member Frank DeToma and Tovah Woldorf, who set up and staffed the sale.

Leaf collection

The annual fall yard waste collection will kick into high gear next week and run until Nov. 24.

Yard waste in paper bags or open-top containers must be at curbside by 7 a.m. on collection day. No plastic bags will be collected. Brush must be tied in bundles, not exceeding 4 feet long. Each trash route will have two collections. Residents are asked to keep yard waste separate from trash barrels. For information, contact recycling coordinator Véronique Blanchard Smith at the Department of Public Works, 538-5033, or email her at vblanchardsmith@southhadleyma.gov.
