Weekend Planner — Talk
Known as “The Doyenne of Death,” Albuquerque-based Gail Rubin is the author of a book (“A Good Goodbye: Funeral Planning for Those Who Don’t Plan to Die”) and a blog (“The Family Plot”) about funeral planning issues. She’s also a certified event planner who specializes in funerals and memorial services. On Sunday she’ll be at the Clarion Hotel in Northampton on the occasion of the annual meeting of the Funeral Consumers Alliance of Western Massachusetts to deliver a presentation titled “Laughing in the Face of Death: Funny Films for Funeral Planning.” Featuring clips from films and television (“Death at a Funeral,” “The Big Lebowski,” “Undertaking Betty,” the famous “Chuckles Bites the Dust” episode from “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”), the program uses gentle humor to convey information about funeral arrangements that people tend to ignore until faced with a death in the family.
